Provide Aid to Afghanistan for Free

If you’re age 18 or older, have access to a camera and computer, and want to raise money to help Afghanistan without having to spend any yourself, here is your perfect opportunity to do so. Riverhead Trade Paperbacks (of Penguin books) is sponsoring a campaign called “Picture a Book Changing Lives” to help the people of Afghanistan through The Khaled Hosseini Foundation. Founded by the author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Khaled Hosseini Foundation is a nonprofit humanitarian aid organization that supports refugee families, education of women and children, and other assistance to the war-torn country of Afghanistan.

The new campaign is running all summer through August 31. To participate and automatically generate a $2 donation to The Khaled Hosseini Foundation, people can log onto the Penguin website and upload a picture of themselves holding a copy of one of Khalad Hosseini’s highly acclaimed bestselling books—either The Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns. Join the “Hosseini” grop at the website, tag your photo, and upload it. If it’s a clear picture, you’ll automatically raise $2 for the foundation. You can participate up to two times, raising a total of $4 for the project.

The best part of this viral campaign is that you don’t have to spend any money! Get together with a bunch of friends and just use one camera to take turns taking pictures of you all with the books. Use one friend’s copies, or borrow them from the library. It’ll be the easiest fundraiser you’ve ever held.

If you attend college or high school, be sure to ask friends to participate if your school starts before September as well. Forward this page to friends, family, coworkers, and anyone else who might be able to participate. Print it out and show it to your librarians and see if they can help create a buzz around it on their websites or bulletin boards. If you already have one of the books, it will literally only take minutes to take part—and if not, a trip to the library is still a pretty cheap way to get this donation.

The campaign will continue until August 31 or until $25,000 is raised, whichever happens first. Let’s ensure that $25,000 will be raised and take part today. If you have not read either of these amazing novels, it’s a great time to do that, too. The photos have to be still, taken by residents of the U.S., District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, and authorized as royalty-free. For more official rules, please visit the website.
